Recommended Practice based on International Guidelines
To protect privacy and confidentiality of the deceased, some countries provide for a long-form death certificate which contains cause of death information and a short-form death certificate which does not contain cause of death information. The long-form death certificate is only accessible to family and those with a legitimate interest in learning cause of death, such as government officials. Short-form certificates are accessible by anyone and used as a record of death for administrative purposes.
